Stay in, branch out with BACOA's virtual lineup

The Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA) continues to offer a wide variety of virtual programming with presentations, concerts and activities that can be accessed by Zoom.

All programs are free; participants can join them by computer (video and sound), smartphone (video and sound) or regular phone (sound only).

August programs include:

• Every Tuesday: 11 a.m., virtual bingo; prizes will be provided.

• Wednesday, Aug. 5: 1 p.m., "Creating with Kathleen." Local artist Kathleen McCann will lead participants through an art project creating a piece that highlights the beauty and elegance of the dogwood tree.

• Thursday, Aug. 6: 11 a.m., "The Horses of Walk On." Join on a virtual tour of this local nonprofit whose mission is dedicated to providing equine-assisted activities to people with physical, cognitive, social and emotional disabilities. Meet the horses and staff whose dedication make this organization a pillar in our community.

• Friday, Aug. 7: 1 p.m., "A Marvelous Meal with Michelle." Enjoy a mouthwatering afternoon as Barrington foodie Michelle Lovelace takes you into her kitchen for a demonstration of one of her delicacies.

• Wednesday, Aug, 13: 1 p.m. BACOA Bookworms. For BACOA's first virtual book club, Janine O'Leary will lead the discussion on the quirky character novel "Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman.

• Monday, Aug. 17: 1 p.m., "Tales of Madagascar." Peace Corps volunteer Marie-Claire Sei shares stories and pictures from her recent post in Madagascar. Learn about the culture and charm of this remote land and the people who warmed her heart and taught her countless lessons.

• Tuesday, Aug. 18: 2 p.m., "Happy Feet." Put your best foot forward as local foot and ankle specialist Dr. Jim Baird teaches how to care for one of the most neglected places on our bodies - our feet.

• Wednesday, Aug. 19: 11 a.m., Caregiving 101. Learn the different stages of caregiving and how to determine what stage you are in on your caregiving journey. Joyce Palmquist will lead the discussion.

• Wednesday, Aug. 19: 1 p.m., "Tips, Tidbits and Dust Bunnies: Decluttering and Organizing." Jennifer Prell of Paxem, Inc., will guide participants through helpful steps to organize, declutter, and store - whether you are considering a move or are just tired of your accumulated "stuff."

• Friday, Aug. 21: 11 a.m., "Folk on Friday." Acoustic duo Second Wind - Doug Saylor on guitar and Joyce Palmquist on mandolin - will end the week right with an eclectic blend of folk, pop, country, bluegrass and blues.

• Thursday, Aug. 27: 1 p.m., "Family Feud." An afternoon of interactive game-playing. How well can you guess what the "Survey Says?"

Updates will be posted regularly on BACOA's website, bacoa.org, and on its Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The Barrington Area Council on Aging promotes vibrant, healthy aging by providing activities, education, and support to older adults, families and caregivers. Established in 1984, BACOA serves approximately 1,400 clients annually in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.
