20-year prison term in 2019 Carpentersville gas station robbery, beating of clerk

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to robbing a Carpentersville gas station at gunpoint in early 2019 and attacking a clerk.

Antonio D. Young, 26, of the 5900 block of West Ohio Street, pleaded guilty late last week to one count of armed robbery, a felony that carried a six- to 30-year prison term, according to Kane County court records.

Judge John Barsanti accepted the guilty plea, which also requires Young to pay $1,562 in restitution for the victim's medical expenses.

Young entered a gas station on the 1300 block of Kings Road about 5:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 2019, bought a cigar and waited for other customers to leave. Young asked the clerk what he could buy for 50 cents, then pulled out a handgun and demanded cash.

The clerk tried to push Young away and grab a phone, but Young struck the man on the head and face with the gun, according to prosecutors. Young then punched the man and knocked him down and took cash and a bottle of liquor.

Police arrested Young a short time later and recovered a gun as well as the liquor bottle. Young's DNA was on the bottle and the victim's DNA was found on the gun as well, prosecutors said.

Young gets credit for about 18 months served at the Kane County jail while his case was pending.
