Uncomfortable time

I am writing as an active member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Elgin. I find myself in a place in history that is uncomfortable for me as a Christian. It seems that Christianity has been co-opted in our country by nationalism, misstated patriotism (Christ was not an American), the religious right (which does not speak for all Christians) and Donald Trump who has effectively merged these strident voices in support for his un-Christ like agenda.

I believe in the separation of church and state. When we see faith and idolatrous nationalism as synonymous, we have lost our way as Christians and citizens. How do we guarantee the rights given us in the constitution if they are denied to people because of differences in religion or culture? Isn't our world view distorted if we think that God is on our side in our dealings with the rest of creation?

My faith and the Bible guide me in the candidates and policies I support. Matthew 25 addresses the judgment of the nations. These criteria never address a person or nation confessing faith in Christ, but rather the deeds that are expected from anyone who is righteous. When did you feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger (alien), clothe the naked, care for the sick and visit the prisoner? These are actions that are expected of us toward the least among us. This doesn't ask us to sit in judgment of our neighbor to ascertain his worthiness.

This call to action is what leads me to oppose the present administration's attacks on immigrants, LGBTQ rights, women, Muslims and the very creation that was created to sustain us. Micah 6:8 says it all. Do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.
