Boy, 5, in critical condition after rescue from Indiana lake

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) - A 5-year-old boy who was rescued from a northern Indiana lake after he vanished while swimming was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, a conservation officer said.

The boy had been swimming along a public beach at Pike Lake in Warsaw when he vanished in its waters about 7 p.m. Monday, state conservation officer Matthew Maher said.

The child was later found unresponsive by a relative and pulled from about five feet (1.5 meters) of water near the lake's public swimming pier.

Emergency personnel provided CPR and emergency aid and the boy was later airlifted to Lutheran hospital in Fort Wayne.

Maher said the boy was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon. He said the boy's name was not being released because authorities were still working to notify his relatives about the accident.

The incident in Warsaw, a city about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Fort Wayne, remains under investigation by Indiana conservation officers.
