Comic book creator lends hero to worthy cause
A comic book creator is lending his superhero to a worthy cause with the help of some of his Hollywood friends.
Mark Starks, creator of "Martian," is producer of an upcoming series of public service announcements for ComicBooks For Kids, a Chicago nonprofit organization. CB4K provides new comic books to children in hospitals and cancer centers across the United States.
The campaign is scheduled to premiere on CAN TV (Chicago Access Network Television) this summer, followed by distribution to cable television stations nationwide by TV Access, reaching a potential audience of 50 million.
Hollywood actor Paul Ganus is narrator while Wally Wingert provides the intros and outros. Starks wrote the script along with Mark Weiss, founder and president of CB4K.
Weiss and Starks believe the spots are a strong candidate for Emmy consideration next year. "Our mission is very straight forward. It is to provide child friendly comic books to children in hospitals and cancer centers across the U.S. Your mission is to contribute. Regardless of how you help, you are making a difference," Starks said.
CB4K is a GuideStar Platinum charity, which is awarded to half of 1% of the 3.5 million charities in the U.S.
A cover of one of Starks' "Martian" comic books can briefly be seen in each of the spots.
