Lake County Parking Garage closing for repairs

Lake County will close the 508-space public and employee parking garage at 18 N. County St., Waukegan, for four months beginning Monday, July 13.

During the closure, the parking garage will undergo scheduled repairs. The work will consist of repairing exposed steel and structural cracks, replacing failing drains and stormwater plumbing lines, installing two additional electric vehicle charging stations, and resurfacing the lower level.

"This is an important project which will help improve the longevity of the parking garage," Director of Facilities and Construction Carl Kirar said. "We are also saving costs by completing all the work at once instead of performing it in phases, which would be extremely cost prohibitive."

The Lake County board recently approved a parking lease with the city of Waukegan for their City of Waukegan Garage, 225 N County St. This public garage is located one block from the Lake County Government campus and courthouse, and employees and those visiting the main Lake County Government tower may park there for the duration of the rehabilitation project.

Those visiting the courthouse are encouraged to park in the city lot at Clayton and County Street, where parking fees are $1 per hour. A list of courthouse parking alternatives is below:

• Lot C: Clayton and County streets

• Lot D: Sheridan Road and Clayton Street

• Lot F: Water and Sheridan streets

• Lot O: Behind Genesee Theater (north side of Sheridan Road and Clayton Street)

The Lake County Parking Garage rehabilitation project is expected to be completed by Friday, Nov. 13.
