Clubhouse Chatter: The best athlete ever to come out of the suburbs

What our Sports staff has to say while waiting for the games to resume.

I'll pick Tamika Catchings. She went from Aptakisic Junior High, then spent two years at Stevenson High School before moving to Texas, and became the best women's basketball player in the country. She won a high school state title in Illinois, an NCAA title at Tennessee, a WNBA championship and four Olympic gold medals. And she's been a terrific role model all the way through.

This is a no-brainer: Red Grange in a landslide. The Wheaton Iceman backed up his legendary status with ridiculous gridiron talent at Wheaton High School, the University of Illinois and in professional football.

Male: Red Grange. The Wheaton Iceman almost single-handedly saved the NFL in its early days. Female: Candace Parker. The Naperville Central graduate's list of accomplishments is unmatched, and she's still going strong at age 34.

Candace Parker. What a treat it was watching her dominate as a freshman at Naperville Central and then seeing everything she's gone on to do at Tennessee, the WNBA and the world basketball stage. She's also an excellent analyst.

Dave Kingman? OK, maybe not. So I'll go with Red Grange. How can you not like a guy who played four sports and ended up being one of the best the NFL has ever had.

Red Grange (Wheaton) took home 16 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball and track. Piled up 75 TDs with 532 points. And he's Red Grange.

It's hard to top Jimmy Garoppolo from Rolling Meadows High School. He has a lot to prove after fading in Super Bowl LIV, but his career is still on the upside and Garoppolo has all the tools to be an elite quarterback.
