Lincolnshire cancels Fourth fireworks; announces contest

The Village of Lincolnshire Board of Trustees has canceled the community's Fourth of July fireworks display out of an abundance of caution for public health.

The board originally decided to keep the fireworks display after canceling the annual Red, White, & Boom! celebration. After further discussion, they reversed their decision.

The reversal came after an analysis of surrounding communities showed Lincolnshire would be one of the few areas to host a fireworks show. As a result, the board expected the display to draw crowds that would violate Illinois Department of Public Health's social distancing and gathering guidelines.

"Fourth of July is a treasured holiday in the Lincolnshire community. We looked at this event from every angle and tried to figure out a way to safely manage the potential crowds," Mayor Elizabeth J. Brandt said.

"However, a fireworks display would be contrary to IDPH guidelines, and we need to put the health and safety of our community first. In addition to public health and safety concerns, the board also recognized the financial resources needed to provide adequate police and public works staff to safely manage crowds and traffic flow for a fireworks display that may draw spectators from throughout the region."

Although Fourth of July will be different, Lincolnshire residents can stay engaged with their neighbors through a villagewide #LincolnshireStrong Independence Day decorating contest.

The contest asks participants to decorate their homes in theme with the Fourth of July. A panel of judges will vote for their favorite decorated in home in the following categories: Most Patriotic; Most Unique; Most Fun; Best Driveway.

Additionally, residents will vote online for the Community's Choice winner. Participants have the chance to win up to $150 to a Lincolnshire restaurant.

Any resident who wants to participate should email Jack Cascone, administrative intern, at jcascone@lincolnshireil.gov by June 30.
