Fire destroys eastern Indiana city's trash trucks, plows

NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP) - An eastern Indiana city lost most of its trash trucks, snowplows and salt trucks in a fire early Wednesday.

The fire at New Castle's street department occurred shortly after midnight, Mayor Greg York said. It burned the building to the ground.

'œIt was a very, very hot fire,'ť York told WRTV-TV. 'œIt was a metal building. All that metal caught on fire and just melted like butter '“ just dripping.'ť

Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire and nobody was hurt. An electrical issue is believed to have sparked the blaze.

York said the city still has two older trash trucks that are in operation. The city also is trying to lease some equipment. Nearby communities have called to offer the use of their trash trucks, he said.
