Oak Brook cops warn of 'ruse burglaries'
Oak Brook police are cautioning residents about a recent series of "ruse burglaries" in which the offenders represent themselves as public utility employees and generally target senior citizens.
The offenders have been operating in teams of two or three and may make reference to COVID-19 as a reason to enter the home to check water pressure, deal with an electrical problem or suggest home repairs.
Typically, once the victim has been isolated, the offender interacting with the homeowner will make contact with a second offender via cellphone or two-way radio.
A discussion will take place between the offenders in an unknown language and continue until the burglary is complete. The offender interacting with the homeowner will then abruptly leave.
