River Trail School holds Summer Send-Off parade
Submitted by Gurnee School District 56
On Saturday, May 30, River Trail School students and their families lined up in their vehicles to say goodbye to the teachers and staff at their K-8 school.
Staff members and teachers stood by their cars in the parking lot, holding signs, waving and shouting to students as they passed. This was the first time in 11 weeks the students had been able to see their teachers in real life and not on a screen.
Social distancing remained in place and a Gurnee police officer kept the flow of the parade moving as students and teachers got the closure they had all been desperately missing after school ended.
This Summer Send-Off allowed the staff members the opportunity to say congratulations and good luck to their eighth-graders, who are headed off to Warren High School in the fall. It also allowed the educators to say "we miss you, have a great summer, and we can't wait to see you next year" to the kindergarten through seventh-grade students.
So many people went above and beyond with decorating their vehicles and making signs, but the one thing that stood out the most at this parade was all of the smiles.
