Violence never resolves violence

Re: "Vandals, looters damage downtown Naperville businesses," June 2.

What did any of the private citizens and businesses who lost millions of dollars of property in these national riots do to deserve this outrage? What did the senior citizens do to merit not having their medication, insulin needles, or food delivered to them when UPS and grocery delivery trucks have been looted and destroyed all over the country? This is America's national shame.

All of the police vehicles that were destroyed will have to be replaced at a great cost to all of us - the American taxpayer.

Violence never resolves violence. Destroying and looting businesses that represent an important economic engine of communities will only hurt all of the people who live there - not just the police. I call upon my fellow Americans to follow the precepts of Dr. Martin Luther King and protest the unjust death of George Floyd at the hands of the police in a nonviolent way.

Though our justice system may be slow to respond, it is far more accurate and methodical than random mob "justice." It also targets the guilty and not the innocent. This anarchic violence will only further alienate, divide and polarize us as Americans and will set us back decades in race relations. This descent into the heart of darkness must stop.
