Mount Prospect library eliminates late fines

The Mount Prospect Public Library eliminated all library late fines for patrons as part of "Fine Amnesty Day" on Monday.

The library board authorized the action at its May 21 board meeting. Charges for damaged or missing materials or fees are not part of the amnesty program.

The library also opened its outdoor book drops for several hours Monday at the main library and welcomed returns as part of its phase-in reopening plan. The library will continue to accept materials at its drive-up and walk-up book drops during the day until at capacity; patrons are encouraged to monitor social media for book drop hours. Outdoor book drops are not available at South Branch.

If an item is too big for the book drop, patrons may keep it until the library buildings reopen; library staff may not accept returns.

Since the library buildings closed in March, the library has not assessed overdue fines for any materials. This will continue while the library buildings are closed.
