Wearing mask respects health of others

I think that many people do not really understand why they are being encouraged or required to wear masks during the current pandemic. I have seen the following statements:

"My husband has a preexisting condition so he wears a mask when we go out, but I do not."

"I am willing to take the risk so I choose not to wear a mask."

"Anyone who is concerned about catching the virus can wear a mask, but I do not believe this is a real threat so I won't."

"No one has the right to tell me to wear a mask."

These statements imply that the individual should make their own choice and that choosing to wear a mask is for your own protection. Of course, anyone who has paid close enough attention knows this is not the case.

You wear a mask to protect others. You wear a mask because you respect the rights of others. The typical cloth mask will not protect you - the wearer - from contracting the virus. But it can prevent you from passing the virus on to others by blocking droplets spread from coughing, sneezing, talking and even just breathing. Some will still say "well I am not sick, so I cannot infect anyone else." This is also not true. You may be carrying the virus and have no symptoms.

So please, show some respect for your friends and neighbors - wear a mask when and where it is requested.
