Leaders must be held accountable

The editorial titled "Pritzker's call to greatness" speaks of the governor's need to rally the public behind his pandemic plan. The Daily Herald is correct that Pritzker's support by the people of Illinois is crumbling and does well to represent the many issues spurring the public outrage. Why then the soft sell on the fact that there has been no legislative ratification of the order, effectively acknowledging that Pritzker is acting without authority?

Why no mention that the check on executive power, the Illinois General Assembly, has simply allowed this to happen? Where is the outrage over Pritzker's overreach and the complete dereliction of duty on the part of the legislature?

The piece merely suggests that it might be hard, as though true leadership was ever a walk in the park.

I am outraged that concerns expressed by the millions of Illinoisans facing economic ruin are met with contempt, derision and threats. I am outraged that while our elected officials play fast and loose with legality, we, the people, are being threatened with, ironically, legal action stemming from noncompliance with Pritzker's order. I am outraged that our state's economy lies in ruins, and all we get from our politicians is finger pointing.

True leaders would have an economic recovery plan conceived, ratified and enacted. Illinoisans for years have tolerated corrupt and ineffective leadership. Our apathy has brought us to this moment of financial ruin and tyranny. Only holding our elected officials accountable can save us.
