Gun violence threatens women during lockdown

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) strongly supports the prevention of mental or physical abuse of women. During the pandemic, a combination of factors increases the threat of violence against women. The number of guns purchased in Illinois doubled in March 2020 and with a stay-at-home order in effect, this creates a dangerous situation for domestic violence.

These circumstance have resulted in increased domestic violence calls to hotlines by 17% in Naperville. Research shows women in homes with guns are five times more likely to be killed. At this time, any woman who is being abused or threatened by her significant other is less able to escape from her home situation or connect with friends who could support her.

Mental health counselors and domestic abuse lawyers may be less available due to reduced hours or closing of businesses.

State legislators should ensure that there are comprehensive licensing procedures for gun owners including gun safety training, fingerprinting, recent background checks for all gun sales, 5 year FOID cards; and that mental health support and legal aid are deemed essential services that are funded by the state or federal government during this crisis.
