Elk Grove Village Public Library Announces Elimination of Overdue Fines

On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, the Elk Grove Village Public Library's Board of Trustees approved a new Fines Free Policy, joining other Illinois libraries in a growing national trend advocated by the American Library Association. Going forward, the Elk Grove Village Public Library (EGVPL) will no longer charge fines for overdue books and most other materials. Additionally, when the Library reopens, all existing overdue fines will be erased from all Library cardholder accounts, giving everyone a clean slate.

The Library's Board of Trustees believes the elimination of fines is the right thing to do and aligns with Mayor Johnson's efforts to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

EGVPL's fines account for less than 0.5% of revenue and has a minimal impact on its budget. However, fines can have a significant impact on families, making this decision very timely given the recent economic crisis.
