Even in pandemic, all branches must work

In the middle of this pandemic, there is nothing as important as ensuring our institutions continue to function, even if it's via video. Because of the stay at home orders, our Congress and Supreme Court are having difficulties meeting in person. This leaves our executive branch as the only normally functioning institution. As Federalist 51 states, the branches of our government must have checks between them to maintain balance and ensure no institution is left solely responsible because, as Madison said, "If men were angels, no government would be necessary." This implies that people are inherently imperfect, so divided government is necessary to combat imperfections.

With only one branch of government still meeting normally, it is important to keep our other institutions working. The Supreme Court hearing arguments via video is one of these efforts that ensures our democracy remains safe and fully functional through the end of this pandemic. Hopefully Congress will follow suit.

Our executive branch has the safeguards put in place to allow it to be self-sufficient in times of crises. These powers are saved for wartime when decisions must be made quickly and without the long processes that Congress and the courts can require. Some may argue that this pandemic institutes a time of crisis in which the functions of Congress and the Supreme Court will only hinder efficient responses by our government. Our executive has been taking some of these powers, shutting down borders and giving almost daily press conferences, but without Congress and the courts working with the executive, there is no check to ensure these powers are not abused and that the executive's actions are backed up by another elected body, making them more legitimate.
