Don't make us choose between health, voting
Vote like your life depends on it. We've heard this in so many elections, but in a strange twist, this year going to the polls may truly be a life or death decision.
We have an example in the recent Wisconsin primary, where in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, many people braved the virus and waited in long lines to vote.
The chaotic situation certainly deprived many people of their right to vote.
We face a similar situation in November. Many experts say that even if the disease lessens its hold in the spring, there could be a second wave in the fall.
Most election judges and a large voting block are senior citizens, a high-risk population. If we act now, we can still have a safe and efficient election without risking people's lives.
Senators Warren, Wyden and Klobuchar have proposed legislation that:
• expands no-excuse vote-by-mail in all states;
• requires states to establish contingency plans to vote in emergencies;
• requires states to provide envelopes with prepaid postage to all voters who request registration applications and/or absentee ballots; and
• requires absentee ballots to be counted if postmarked or signed before the close of polls on Election Day.
Here in Illinois we have a no-excuse-needed absentee ballot program. We need to make sure that we have a coordinated and transparent process for voters throughout the state to access this information.
We also need to ensure that other states have similar rights.
By supporting the Warren, Wyden and Klobuchar legislation, we can be prepared for November. People shouldn't have to choose between their health and voting. Contact your legislators.
