Take extra steps to offer spring sports

The IHSA ruled there will be no spring state tournaments, but left the door open for possible conference play "if and when the state deems it safe." But the following day, the Daily Herald presented the opposite stand, declaring "false hope" on the front page, then giving writer John Radtke an editorial with an opposite stance of the IHSA.

We all should agree that we need to get back to some type of normalcy in a safe manner.

The IHSA should go out of their way to give the athletes a taste of the spring sports. One option can be for each high school to have a dual track meet or doubleheader against each conference school, this could extend into late June. Yes, there will be work, coordination, extended insurance policies and coordinating umpires and officials, but I bet most student\athletes, coaches, administrators and parents will be all in.

Not to leave out senior students, one last day of school for seniors only. It may be mid-June and the classes could be spread over the campus and even outside. The school has been a major part of each student's fabric and foundation for four years and they need that chance to say goodbye to teachers, assistants, administrators and each other.

Who has a crystal ball what June 1 looks like? Why not keep the door of possibility open? "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things ..."
