Clubhouse Chatter: Which sports event would you have liked to attend?

What our Sports staff has to say while waiting for the games to resume.

My son's local Little League World Series championship game. Tickets were widely available, and free to boot, but I was out of town covering the White Sox and missed the kid pitching in the one game you want to play at that age. His team wound up winning, which made missing it sting even more.

As much as I would have loved being at Game 7 of the 2016 World Series in Cleveland to see the Cubs finally win it all, I honestly don't think my fragile nerves could have handled it. So instead I'll pick Super Bowl 20, and the Bears' legendary championship. At 46-10 - even though I still remember the Bears trailing 3-0 - it was a completely enjoyable viewing experience.

It's hard to imagine any die-hard Cubs fan not choosing Game 7 of the 2016 World Series. Few victories could produce tears of both joy and sadness for the generations who never saw the Cubs win a world championship. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Phillies 23, Cubs 22. May 17, 1979. Some older kids from our west suburban grade school went on a field trip to Wrigley that Thursday, my oldest sister included. My mom was one of the chaperones. Our family had moved to the Chicago area from Philadelphia two years earlier. Mom, a lifelong Phillies fan, enjoyed the outcome more than most of the 14,952 in attendance. They saw a once-in-a-lifetime game. Dad saved the ticket stubs.

I would've loved to be in Chicago Stadium for the 1991 NHL All-Star Game. I watched it on TV and it was outstanding; the game not so much. It was the national anthem with Wayne Messmer in the organ loft. It might've been the loudest I've ever heard it. As Dale Tallon once said while he was a TV analyst after a particularly rousing rendition, "If that doesn't get you, you're dead and don't know it."
