Indiana police probe deaths of woman, toddler found in home

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The deaths of a woman and a toddler found dead inside a southwestern Indiana home were being investigated as a possible double homicide, police said.

Vanderburgh County sheriff's deputies found the bodies Wednesday night in a home on Evansville's north side after a concerned relative called 911, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

Sheriff Dave Wedding said the woman was found dead in the garage of the duplex with 'œobvious trauma'ť to her face and body. A short time later a toddler was found dead in an upstairs bedroom.

Wedding said the deaths were being investigated as a possible double homicide, with autopsies scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Investigators weren't sure of the relationship between the woman and young child, but Wedding said Wednesday night that he presumed they were mother and child.

'œYou get called out to something like this, you have a probably mother and a young child deceased; so it's disturbing,'ť he said.

Wedding said it's unclear how long the bodies had been in the home before they were discovered.

Investigators who scoured the home inside and out after obtaining a search warrant were trying to determine who lived there and if there was a history of law enforcement calls to the residence.
