Church making Sunshine Calls
Teen and adult volunteers from Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Aurora are making Sunshine Calls to seniors to help them stay connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The calls are occurring weekly, or as often as the seniors would like, whether they live alone or with someone else. The callers ask if the seniors have any needs the faith community can assist with and serve as active listeners who offer to pray with the seniors.
Volunteers made initial calls to more than 300 seniors age 70 and older and more than 500 calls to seniors ages 60 to 69.
"It has been a rewarding experience to those who are called and the callers," said Jolene Leroy, a faith community nurse at Amita Health Mercy Medical Center who serves at Our Lady of Mercy.
