'Gig workers' need help now, Governor
An open letter to Gov. Pritzker:
It is time for you to get to work regarding unemployment for gig workers. Your recent press conference stated the gig worker website would not be up and running until mid May. That is totally unacceptable.
I am a gig worker and since this shelter in place, my income, as well as that of many other gig workers, has taken a major hit. A lot of us cannot wait till mid May. We still have mortgage/rent payments to make. We need to put food on the table. We also have other financial obligations to meet.
You are comfortable with your millions in the bank. The state legislators as well as all other state employees are getting their pay as scheduled.
The IT workers who are supposedly working to resolve the issue area getting paid. Why are the gig workers being treated as second class citizens?
I can and will promise you that unless the situation is resolved quickly it will be remembered come the next election for governor.
