Fremd Wind Symphony earns SuperState recognition
Early in 2020, the William Fremd High School Wind Symphony submitted a recording for consideration in the annual SuperState competition.
Last week, the University of Illinois announced that, for the second consecutive year, Fremd High School was named as a Class 3A recipient. This is also the school's fourth time receiving this recognition.
Fremd High School Music Chairman Matt Moore said that while the band was disappointed to hear that the annual festival was canceled, they are proud of their accomplishment.
"This year is very bittersweet since the May festival cannot take place," he said. "But our Wind Symphony students are still very proud and excited of this prestigious recognition. I am so proud of them. They worked exceptionally hard on the recording pieces and sounded phenomenal."
A band can enter into the competition by sending a video recording of the ensemble with no identifying information. The ensemble's performance is then evaluated by four out-of-state college band directors.
The panel of judges sends their decisions to the University of Illinois, who announces the results.
In a statement on the University of Illinois' SuperState website, they said, "While we are more than disappointed that we won't get to enjoy the performances of these excellent junior high/middle school and high school bands in person, we do want to celebrate their high level of recorded audio performances, which enabled the out-of-state SuperState listening adjudicators to rank them at the top of their respective classes."
