Chicago boy, 17, fatally shot along with his dog during walk

CHICAGO (AP) - A teenage boy was shot and fatally wounded along with his dog as the youth was walking the canine near his Chicago home, police said.

The boy, who was later identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as 17-year-old Juan Martinez, was struck multiple times in the body and once in the head Tuesday afternoon on Chicago's southwest side, police said.

He was admitted in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital and later died from his injuries.

Police said the teen lived on the same block in the Little Village neighborhood where he and the dog were shot.

Chicago police spokeswoman Karie James said a witness told officers the dog had belonged to Martinez. The canine, which was of an unknown breed, was found dead at the scene.

James said police were continuing to investigate the shooting and no one was in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
