Experience we need now

In an era where the work of federal agencies is often observed skeptically, times like these remind us of the necessity for a well-functioning, well-informed federal government. Consequently, we must ensure that our federal government is filled with leaders who themselves are well-informed and dedicated to the public welfare. I am, therefore, grateful to be represented in the 14th congressional district by Lauren Underwood.

One of only three nurses in Congress, Underwood brings a distinctly valuable perspective to the conversation regarding the needs of our health care workers and hospital systems on the front lines of fighting covid-19. For instance, she knows firsthand that a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) can be the difference between life and death for health care workers and their patients. That's why she has advocated for the president to invoke the Defense Production Act so that we might produce more needed PPEs.

Beyond this, Underwood has substantive experience as a health policy expert in the Obama administration, where she supported the Obama White House's successful responses to international health crises like Ebola and Zika. It's rare for a legislator to have such rich firsthand experience in how policy affects workers on the ground, in the bureaucratic implementation of policy and the need for coordinated responses to international crises. Underwood has the experience we need in a moment like this. As our public health and our economy quite literally hinge on the decisions made in the federal government, I implore voters in the 14th district not to take Underwood's experience and dedication for granted.
