Lombard Historical Society announces contest winners

The Lombard Historical Society has announced six local students are the winners of the 2020 Sheldon Peck Letter Writing Contest.

Nellie Quinn of St. John's Lutheran School came in first place, Grace Sabourin of St. John's was second and Morgan Murphy of St. John's finished third. Honorable mentions went to Brynn Staffeldt and Taylor Griffith of Pleasant Lane Elementary and Katelyn Gullang of St. John's.

The contest challenged all Lombard fifth-grade students to imagine they were folk artist and abolitionist Sheldon Peck writing a letter to Abraham Lincoln in 1848. Students were encouraged to visit the Sheldon Peck Homestead, the oldest home and the first school in Lombard, to see Peck's paintings, learn about his advocacy and gain inspiration.

The historical society canceled an award ceremony to recognize the winners. It was originally scheduled for March 22.
