Happy Twirlers Celebrating 50th Anniversary of Square Dancing in Des Plaines

The Happy Twirlers Dance Club was founded by Charles and Lee Weiler on April 26, 1969. Square Dance is an American Folk Dance which brings people together for friendship, dance and fun. The club was founded and meets every Monday in Des Plaines, Il.

Square Dancing began as the United States grew and diversified, as a new generation created a version of some of the traditional dances from their ancestral homeland. But instead of memorizing every step, participants began relying on callers to provide cues - and square dance calling became an art form of its own; so popular at one time it was taught in high school gym class. Today there are Square Dance clubs throughout the United States, and it is danced throughout the world; always "called" in English.

The Happy Twirlers have participated in the Des Plaines 4th of July parades, Hoe Downs, at libraries and community events. Special thanks to The Weilers, Chuck Jaworski, The First Congregational Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, Des Plaines Park District, and to all of the members throughout the years.

Monday night workshops are held with Cliff Benson as the primary caller. Interested in Square Dance lessons? For more information, contact Leslie at (312) 301-5654.
