Gender wage gap is misstated

In the Suburban Mosaic column, Ms. Krishnamurthy states that women earn 79 cents for every dollar earned by men for the same work. I see this stat often. It is not accurate. The ratio may be correct but the "same work" part of the statement is not true.

When adjusted for type of work, amount of experience, level of education and hours worked the gap is at most 2%. I challenge Ms. Krishnamurthy to show me a common job that pays women less than men.

Stories about salary differences for World Cup male and female soccer players feed this misconception. If as more women watched women's soccer games, there would be no gap.
