Government programs are good for country
Few American are aware that the modern welfare state with its extensive government social programs and safety net, was invented by none other than the extremely conservative but wise German "Iron" chancellor Otto von Bismarck. His brand of "socialism" has contributed so much to the economic and cultural welfare of, for example, Nordic countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark), Germany and Canada. When compared to the U.S., those countries have more individual freedom, more equality and democracy, higher standard of living, less crime and corruption and a more educated, healthy and happy citizenry.
Such countries serve as the role model for the self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders. Like Bismarck, Sanders takes Christ's teachings seriously. Both believe that a prosperous nation has the duty to support its fellow citizens and their families who have fallen on hard times.
Happily, it turns out that what is good for your soul is ultimately good for your pocketbook. Government social programs and safety nets are good for our country and its economy. As the saying goes: Everyone does better when everyone does better.
