Voters reject $1.2M tax increase for Pingree Grove police
Voters in Pingree Grove on Tuesday rejected a tax increase that would have funneled $1.2 million more per year into improving police protection.
According to unofficial results, 597 people voted in favor of increasing the tax rate .6%, but 853 people voted no.
Had the measure received a thumbs-up, the additional funds would have allowed the village to have two police officers per shift - currently there is only one officer overnight - along with competitive wages for officers, buying more police equipment and upgrading vehicles.
If the rate increase was approved, taxes would have risen $343 a year for a $189,000 home.
