Officer released after being treated for gunshot wound

An eight-year veteran Round Lake Beach police officer who was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon while responding to a domestic battery was treated and released that evening.

Charges have not been announced, but a man involved in the situation was being held in the Lake County jail Monday afternoon as an investigation continues.

Officers responded about 1 p.m. Sunday to a domestic battery involving two adult relatives outside a home on the 100 block of Golfview Drive, in the northern part of the village.

When the officer intervened, one of the two people in the domestic dispute began fighting with the officer. During the altercation, the man grabbed at the officer's gun, which was secured in its holster. The gun fired and while still in the holster and struck the officer in the leg.

He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center for treatment and discharged Sunday evening, according to Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Covelli, a spokesman for the Lake County Major Crimes task force, which is leading the investigation.

Per protocol, the task force conducts an independent investigation because a police officer sustained a gunshot wound.
