Kane extends branch court closures to mid-April; will prioritize essential cases

Officials in the 16th Judicial Circuit in Kane County extended their closings of three branch courts from March 27 through April 20, the chief judge's office said Monday.

Main court houses in St. Charles and Geneva will remain open, but most criminal cases will be delayed and only essential matters, such as orders of protection, in-custody criminal cases, juvenile abuse and neglect hearings and child custody disputes, will be heard.

"We will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis," said Chief Judge Clint Hull, who on Friday ordered branch courts in Elgin, 150 Dexter Court; Aurora, 1200 East Indian Trial Road; St. Charles, 530 S. Randall Road, closed through March 27.

Now, those three locations will be closed another three weeks, reopening April 20.

"We are doing our best to balance the needs of protecting the public and our courthouse staff with keeping the courthouse open to hear those cases that must be heard," Hull said. "We are focused on those cases that involve individuals who are in-custody and those matters that are required for the protection of individuals and the public. I want to thank everyone for their understanding and patience. This is an unprecedented situation and we may need to make more changes in the days ahead."

Friday, Kane officials canceled all seminars, conferences and student courthouse tours.

The Circuit Clerk's Office will mail new court dates to the last known mailing address.

People with questions about future court dates should call the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk at (630) 232-3413 or email circuitclerk@co.kane.il.us.
