Letter from the high school sports editor

To our readers:

It's an unprecedented time in the world and in our high school sports communities.

Not since 9/11 have we seen such sweeping changes in our landscape, the most historic of those being the Illinois High School Association's decision to cancel the remainder of the winter state tournament series in all sports and activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many school districts have now canceled all games and practices through the end of their spring breaks.

The Daily Herald's high school sports staff is not going on vacation. To the contrary, we view this as an important time to keep you, our loyal readers, informed on how the student-athletes, coaches and administrators are dealing with challenges they'll face in the weeks ahead.

We will continue to preview our spring sports teams, we will present our All-Area boys basketball teams Friday, March 20, and we will do our very best to provide you with as much insight as we can on several topics until our student-athletes are allowed to compete again.

Thank you, as always, for reading The Daily Herald.
