League of Women Voters of Elmhurst to show 'Knock Down the House'

In celebration of Women's History Month, join the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst to see the documentary film "Knock Down the House" from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave. (Note, this is not a library program.)

This 2019 documentary film, directed by Rachel Lears, follows the primary campaigns of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush and Paula Jean Swearengin, four progressive Democrats endorsed by Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress who ran for Congress in the 2018 midterm elections.

In 2018, a young bartender in the Bronx, a coal miner's daughter in West Virginia, a grieving mother in Nevada and a registered nurse in Missouri join a movement of insurgent candidates challenging powerful incumbents in Congress. Without political experience or corporate money, these four women are attempting to do what many consider impossible - until one of them pulls off the most shocking political upset in recent American history.

The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst was founded in 1932. Formed from the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the centerpiece of the League's efforts remains to expand participation and give a voice to all Americans. League members do this at all three levels of government, engaging in both broad educational efforts and advocacy. League issues are grounded in its history of making democracy work for all Americans.

For nearly nine decades, members of the League of Women Voters of Elmhurst have worked for:

• Referenda to support quality schools;

• Passage of the 1970 Illinois Constitution;

• Protections of voting rights of citizens, the city manager form of government in Elmhurst;

• The unit school district concept for that same community;

• Separation of storm and sanitary sewers

• A referendum for a new library and preservation of the Wilder Mansion and the land around it;

• Numerous candidate and issue forums and the registration of countless voters.

The League never supports or opposes any political party or candidate. Membership is open to all persons, men and women, ages 16 and older.
