Referendum needed for handling Route 53 land
Regarding the disposition of the land associated with the Route 53 expansion into Lake County, I would believe that a minimum requirement to proceed with the decision should be a binding referendum on Rt. 53 expansion before the land can be released from its current projected use.
This would be a more accurate and true indication of the direction that the majority of Lake County residents would like the project to take. Because, if in fact the majority really don't want and or need the expansion, then the land should not be tied up on a project that will never be realized.
However, if the majority would like to have it completed, well any attempt to re-purpose the land would be counterproductive and wrong.
So, if the majority isn't in favor, then there should be no problem with a binding referendum. And finally, an official binding referendum will very possibly put the issue of expanding Rt. 53 to rest once and for all. Anything other than a binding referendum would be a miscarriage of justice.
