DuPage County: Scouting Class 2A girls basketball regionals

Wheaton Academy regional

Teams (seeds): Marengo (1), Marian Central Catholic (4), Wheaton Academy (5), Aurora Central Catholic (8), St. Edward (10), Somonauk (12).

Sectional: Mendota

Outlook: Marengo looks good with a 19-10 record, but don't rule out Marian Central (8-21), which plays in the very strong East Suburban Catholic Conference. Wheaton Academy has the advantage of hosting in its own gym, but the Warriors will need to play very well for three games to win their own regional. Jerilyn Blackmon leads the Warriors, scoring 10.3 points a game with 2.3 assists a game. Molly Venhuizen averages 7.8 rebounds a game.

Lisle regional

Teams (seeds): Lisle (1), Perspectives (4), St. Joseph (5), Crane (7), Chicago Military (9), Westmont (11).

Sectional: St. Joseph

Outlook: The Lions are peaking at the right time, having won the inaugural Illinois Central Eight Conference championship and with a few players working their way back from injury. The Lions don't have any seniors, but they do boast a balanced lineup. A different player can step up from game to game. Leading scorer Cassidy Allen, 3-point specialist Emma Rossin and sparkplug point guard Tara Kane were named first-team all-conference. Lisle caught a break when it got the top seed, avoiding both No. 2 Marshall and No. 3 Phillips.

Christ the King regional

Teams (seeds): Timothy Christian (1), Holy Trinity (4), Christ the King (6), Noble Rauner (7), Noble Golder (9), Chicago Legal Charter (11).

Sectional: Orr

Outlook: Timothy Christian has lost its last two games, but then a lot of teams have lost to Aurora Christian and Latin this season. The Trojans should have a good chance to win the regional title. They have plenty of height with 6-footers Hannah Schuringa, Grace Roland, Sarah Carstensen and Greta Hoogstra. Junior point guard Sureya Alex and freshman off-guard Madison Drye form a strong backcourt partnership. Bethany Griffin and Christina Sweich add depth off the bench. Schuringa averages 17 points a game, fourth in DuPage County.

IC Catholic regional

Teams (seeds): IC Catholic Prep (2), Walther Christian (3), Ogden International (5), Wells (8), Noble Street Charter (10).

Sectional: Orr

Outlook: IC Catholic coach Todd Fisher is familiar with Walther Christian, having coached there for several years before taking over the Knights. Alia Johnson and Claire Wagner are the focal points for the Knights, both averaging double digits in scoring. Wagner also averages 9.5 rebounds a game. Annie Guinan, Hannah Johnson and Gia Gaudio are among the players who helped IC Catholic place second in the Metro Suburban Blue behind much larger Riverside-Brookfield.
