Chicago police officer guns down armed man early Sunday

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago police officer shot to death an armed man after the person allegedly wounded a person in shooting outside a North Side bar, authorities said Sunday.

Interim police Superintendent Charlie Beck says as officers responded to calls of a disturbance early Sunday a man wounded another person outside the bar and attempted to flee, interim police Superintendent Charlie Beck.

As officers pursued the suspect, he allegedly fired shot at police, who returned fire, killing the man. The initial victim in the incident was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. The gunman, who hasn't been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting by the officer, who was treated for ``bumps and bruises'Å¥ incurred when he fell during the chase, Beck said. And the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days, as required by police department policy.
