Man charged with fatal shooting, wounding cop who saw it

CHICAGO (AP) - A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder for fatally shooting another man on a sidewalk and then wounding an undercover police sergeant who followed him after witnessing the slaying, Chicago police said.

Walter Johnson, 35, also is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated battery with a firearm for the Wednesday shootings, police said.

The sergeant and other officers were involved in an undercover investigation when they observed a suspect shoot a person in the head on the West Side. The suspect got into a pickup, which the sergeant followed, Interim Police Superintendent Charlie Beck said. When the suspect noticed he was being followed, he got out the pickup and fired several shots at the sergeant, returned to the pickup and drove off.

As the sergeant was being taken to the hospital in another police vehicle, he and other officers encountered the pickup again and gave chase, Beck said. The pickup crashed and the suspect was arrested after a short chase. A gun was recovered.

The slain man has been identified as Devell Hill, 26,

The injured officer, whose name hasn't been released, was hospitalized and is.expected to recover from the shooting.
