Indiana man wanted for 2018 home repair fraud in Algonquin
A 39-year-old Indiana man is wanted on a felony charge of aggravated home repair fraud stemming from a 2018 agreement to do a project in Algonquin.
Kane County prosecutors on Thursday announced the felony warrant against Michael P. Geary, of the 6500 block of Rose Ellen Avenue in Portage.
According to prosecutors, Geary agreed to do a home repair project for an Algonquin man, who gave Geary a $3,000 advance for materials in October 2018. Geary deposited the money into his bank account but didn't start the work after several months, so the resident asked for a refund, prosecutors said.
Geary, who is formerly from Hoffman Estates, told the man in 2019 he would refund the money, but did not, according to prosecutors. The felony charge is "aggravated" because the victim was over 60 years old, prosecutors said.
Geary's bail has been set at $50,000. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from probation and restitution to up to seven years in prison.
