Aurora police warn residents of IRS scam
Scammers purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service have been calling Aurora residents.
A video on the Aurora Police Department Facebook page warns residents about the scam, in which the caller inquires about immigration status and claims to know people are here illegally.
The scammers, who threatened deportation if payment isn't made, have been targeting the Hispanic community, but others may be susceptible as well, Sgt. Edgar Gallardo says in the video.
The IRS doesn't function like that, and people who receive the call should simply hang up, Gallardo says. Do not send money or give any personal information such as a Social Security number or a date of birth.
If you have questions, call the Aurora Police Department or visit the IRS website at irs.gov.
The video is available in English and Spanish on the police department's Facebook page and website.
