High school musicians compete for symphony awards

Sixteen high school musicians will perform next month as part of the Elmhurst Symphony Association's 2020 Dr. Robert Stanger Young Artists Audition.

The auditions, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road.

A luncheon will be served from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. The cost is $18 and reservations are available by calling the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra office at (630) 941-0202.

Conducted by the symphony association and sponsored by the Elmhurst Kiwanis Club and the former Auxiliary of the ESO through its Eunice B. Sidener Scholarship, the annual Stanger Audition was started in honor of the late Dr. Robert C. Stanger, who was president of Elmhurst College, a Kiwanian, and president of the Elmhurst Symphony Association.

The audition provides an opportunity for outstanding high school instrumentalists to gain recognition for their efforts and compete for the opportunity to perform a concerto movement with the orchestra.

Three judges will offer written comments to each of the 16 entrants, who come from Elmhurst and nearby suburbs. Students will play music by a range of composers and for several different instruments, including violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute and piano.

Monetary awards are given to the four top performers; the first-place winner will perform with the ESO during its 2020-21 season.
