Stonis lifts College of Lake County to 2-OT win
Wauconda graduate Jarod Stonis had a team-high 28 points, 19 rebounds and 6 assists, and the College of Lake County's men's basketball team outlasted visiting Waubonsee Valley 109-100 in double overtime in Skyway Conference action on Tuesday night.
Waukegan graduate Jaylin Cunningham added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Lancers, who also got big games from Anthony Thompson (7 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists), Aaron Greer (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Darien Bosby (20 points, 6 of 12 from three-point range, 4 assists, 4 rebounds).
Bosby provided a spark off the bench in the first half, which saw the Chiefs lead by as many as 10 points. Bosby made back-to-back 3s to bring the Lancers within 4 points, and they trailed 46-37 at halftime.
It was back and forth for the entire second half, but with four minutes left, Cam Irvin made a 3 to put the Chiefs up by 8 points. Then the Lancers made another push. Bosby made three more 3s, and Thompson hit the game-tying 3 with 25 seconds. Waubonsee had a chance to win it with 1.5 seconds left but missed 2 free throws.
Stonis' two-handed dunk put the Lancers up by 4 in the second overtime, and they ended up outscoring the Chiefs 13-4 to knock off the top team in the Skyway Conference.
The Lancers moved to 15-5 and 3-2 in conference.
"Tonight was a war," Stonis said after playing 47 minutes. "We had to really come together and show that we can compete. We lost to McHenry by 30 and tonight was a statement game."
