Freshman Kiesgen leads Grant past North Chicago
Freshman guard Chad Kiesgen scored 18 points, including 11 of 12 free throws, and Grant's boys basketball team defeated visiting North Chicago 74-68 in Northern Lake County Conference action on Saturday.
Grant (4-14, 1-3) led 15-11 after one quarter, 40-31 at the half and 57-42 after three. The win snapped the Bulldogs' five-game losing streak.
North Chicago fell to 2-2 in the NLCC.
Warren 72, Morton 63 (OT): At Wheaton-Warrenville South, Juan De La Cruz scored 18 points, and the Blue Devils prevailed in overtime to advance to the semifinals of the MLK tournament.
Warren (7-9) will play Benet Academy at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
Jason Langevin added 16 points for the Blue Devils, and Alexander Figueroa had 15 on five 3-pointers. Warren's balanced attack also featured 9 points apiece from Seamus Mellican and Breyton Caruthers.
Warren 57, Wheaton Academy 42: At Wheaton-Warrenville South, the Blue Devils won their first game of the day in the MLK tournament, as Adnan Sarancic had 19 points (three 3-pointers).
Juan De La Cruz and Alexander Figueroa each had 8 points for Warren.
Nazareth 58, Grayslake North 52: At Lakes, Tony Hines scored a game-high 17 points for the Knights, whose fourth-quarter comeback in the MLK tournament game fell short.
Nazareth led 47-28 after three quarters, but Grayslake North (4-10) pulled within 56-52 on Jason Donohue's 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go. The Knights didn't score again.
Tagen Pearson led Nazareth with 16 points, including four 3s.
Dominic Jankowski scored 8 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter for Grayslake North, which also received 10 points from Jamon Thomas. Donohue finished with 8 points.
The Knights will play host Lakes at 10 a.m. Monday.
Wauconda 79, Lake View 45: At Deerfield, Donovan Carter made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points, as the Bulldogs won the MLK tournament game.
Wauconda (11-5) featured five players in double figures. The Bulldogs' other contributors included Justin Drobnik (14 points, two 3s, 3 assists, 2 steals), Griffin Daun (13 points, 3-pointer, 4 assists, 3 steals), Garrison Carter (13 points, three 3s, 2 blocks) and Nick Bulgarelli (12 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals).
Wauconda will play Chicago Rowe-Clark at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Niles North.
Buffalo Grove 68, Round Lake 58: At Lake Zurich, the Panthers lost despite Deveauntay McNeal 29's points.
Kam Craft had 27 points for the Bison in the MLK tournament game. Buffalo Grove (16-4) will play Palatine for the consolation title at 1 p.m. Monday.
Hakim Williams added 18 points for Round Lake (13-6), which will face Willowbrook at 10 a.m. Monday.
Cary-Grove 51, Lake Zurich 45: At Lake Zurich, Cary-Grove advanced to the championship finals of the MLK tournament.
Guard Beau Frericks and 6-foot-8 forward Frank Jakubicek scored 12 points apiece for the Trojans, who recorded their fifth consecutive victory.
Joey Lococo paced Lake Zurich (6-10) with 15 points.
C-G's win sets up a match between a pair of 17-2 teams in Monday's 2:30 p.m. championship clash when the Trojans face Glenbrook South.
