Carpentersville searching for community development director
Carpentersville is searching for a community development director to replace Marc Huber, who recently accepted a position as the village administrator in Beach Park.
Strengthening relationships with businesses, implementing a rebranding initiative and developing the village's economy have been key goals for the Fox Valley community the past several years. The village is seeking a department head who can pursue those objectives at a conceptual level and bring projects to fruition, while also overseeing code enforcement, permit reviews and other similar tasks, Village Manager Eric Johnson said.
"It's a unique role in that it's both highly technical ... and (requires) skills in helping to recruit businesses," he said. "We want to keep Carpentersville known as a business-friendly community."
Hired six years ago to lead the community development department, Huber's responsibilities in Carpentersville evolved over time. He eventually added assistant village manager to his title and held the dual role until he stepped down from his post on good terms at the end of last year, Johnson said.
When former Village Manager Mark Rooney left the village in early 2018, Huber served in as interim manager for more than a year before Johnson was hired. With his unique skillset and knowledge of Carpentersville, Johnson said, Huber was "very helpful" during the transition.
The village has posted the job opening on various sites with the starting salary listed as $106,994 to $120,368, depending on qualifications and experience. Once the community development director position is filled, village officials will address the assistant manager role, Johnson said.
Under the administrative direction of Johnson, Huber's successor will be responsible for supervisory, administrative and technical duties pertaining to planning, zoning, building and code enforcement, general development and economic development, according to the job description. The position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field, though a master's degree is preferred, plus several years of municipal planning and development experience.
Village officials don't have a firm timeline for filling the position, Johnson said, noting they are not using an external search firm.
"We want to make sure we get good applicants," he said. "We're going to take our time to make sure we get the right person."
