Aurora man wounded in weekend shooting charged with weapons offenses

A 19-year-old Aurora man has been charged with felony weapons offenses after he was shot over the weekend inside a home on the city's near west side.

Daron L. Bovan, of the 400 block of Florida Avenue, faces charges of possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner's Identification card, according to Aurora police and Kane County court records.

Police said Bovan was arrested after authorities were called to the 400 block of Florida Avenue about 2 a.m. Saturday after Bovan suffered a graze wound. He was taken to a hospital and officers investigated, learning there was a party at the residence when multiple shots were fired at the home.

Police said the suspect or suspects fled before authorities arrived and the shooting was not random. Aurora police spokesman Paris Lewbel said Bovan is accused of possessing a handgun.

According to Kane County court records, at the time of his Saturday arrest, Bovan was on probation after pleading guilty to felony aggravated battery to a police officer after a March 2019 arrest.

Bovan, according to court records, pleaded guilty in August 2019 and was sentenced to three years probation. He also served 125 days in jail before his guilty plea. He could be resentenced to up to seven years in prison for violating his probation.

Bovan is now being held at the Kane County jail on $110,750 bail, meaning he must post $11,075 to be released while the case is pending.

He is next due in court on Thursday and faces a sentence of up to five years in prison if convicted of the most severe charges in the 2020 case.
