Man steals $50,000 worth of merchandise at Gurnee jewelry store

A man stole $50,000 worth of merchandise from a Gurnee jewelry store Monday morning, police said.

Officers responded about 10:55 a.m. to a jewelry store in the 6500 block of Grand Avenue after a man asked a store employee to see a piece of jewelry from a display and ran out of the store with it, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department.

He didn't threaten any employees and didn't seem to have a weapon, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and used a police dog from the Lake County sheriff's office to track the suspect, the release said. Authorities determined that he drove away, the release said.

The suspect was described as a black man wearing a tan hat, tan Carhartt jacket, blue jeans and tan shoes. He is missing a front, upper left tooth, police said.

Authorities are investigating. Anyone with information can call the Gurnee Police Department at (847) 599-7000.
