Man, 18, charged charged in death of Michigan State student

CHICAGO (AP) - An 18-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Michigan State University student who was killed while home in Chicago on break, authorities said.

Lafayette Hodges turned himself into authorities over the weekend. He was expected in bond court Monday. It was immediately unclear if he had an attorney. A listed phone number could not be located Monday.

He faces a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 19-year-old Lyniah Bell. She was shot in the head late Friday evening in an apartment on the city's South Side, authorities said. Police have said the shooting is believed to have been related to a domestic situation.

Attending MSU was Bell's dream and she was planning to major in business and journalism, family members said.

The freshman had graduated from North Lawndale College Prep in Chicago where she participated in a theater club and was a National Honors Society member.

'œWe just can't say enough good about the positive impact she had on the school community,'ť said Garland Thomas-McDavid, the Chicago charter school's president. 'œShe will be missed dearly, and our hearts grieve alongside her mother and family.'ť
