Head-on crash in Barrington leaves Tesla in flames

Northwest Highway in Barrington was closed for about an hour Wednesday morning between Lake-Cook Road and Hough Street after two cars collided head-on.

No injuries were reported in the crash, but one of the vehicles, a battery-powered 2020 Tesla, caught fire.

Firefighters used a foam retardant to extinguish the blaze before crews removed the vehicles from the roadway.

Barrington officials said the crash occurred just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Zurich Road and Northwest Highway, where the road bends from an east/west direction to north/south.

A village spokeswoman said the two vehicles were headed in opposite directions on Northwest Highway when Robert Edens, the Tesla driver headed east, veered into the westbound lane causing the crash. Edens reported he was temporarily blinded by the rising sun.

Edens was cited for improper lane usage, village officials reported. He was the only occupant of his car.

A 23-year-old woman was the only occupant of the 2017 Subaru Legacy that was struck.
